ZEISS Design System
Date
2021
Client: ZEISS, Munich, Germany
Role: UI/UX Specialist
Scope: Comprehensive design system for internal, external, and research-focused websites
Overview
ZEISS, a global leader in fields like microscopy and meditech, needed a unified design system to bring consistency across its diverse web ecosystem. Their websites—ranging from scientific research portals to internal tools and external facing sites—lacked coherence, with each platform using different patterns and styles. Our small team of designers set out to create a modern, sleek, and scalable design system to standardize all ZEISS web platforms.
Process
- Discovery & Analysis: Conducted audits of existing websites and design patterns, identifying common elements and inconsistencies. User tests informed the redesign, ensuring alignment with real-world needs.
- Design & Prototyping: Designed wireframes, interactive prototypes, and motion studies to establish responsive patterns for components like video players, animation, and scrolling behavior.
- Collaboration & Feedback: Worked closely with stakeholders across ZEISS departments, incorporating feedback to ensure the system met the needs of diverse users and applications.
- Specification & Documentation: Delivered a detailed documentation and "user guide" for teams to independently apply the system, ensuring consistent implementation across departments.
Outcome & Impact
The result was a comprehensive design system—the first of its kind at ZEISS—that provided clear, scalable patterns for all web platforms across the corporation. It established a cohesive user experience, improved consistency, and streamlined development processes across internal and external websites. This new system empowered ZEISS to maintain a unified digital presence while addressing the unique needs of their various audiences.
